The photographs in this series employ a darkroom technique known as the Sabattier effect, or pseudo-solarization. The process involves exposing a partially developed image to a brief flash of light. The result is a partial reversal of tone that makes portions of the print appear negative.

Making images in this manner involves risk with unpredictable results, like resistance to against hegemonic oppression and the curtailing of human and civil rights. Even when the process involves a high degree of uncertainty, the goal of working towards creating something beautiful is a worthy one, whether it’s a work of art or an equal and just society.
